A primary teaching assistant (TA) role is an excellent opportunity to make a real difference in children’s education, drawing on your commitment to developing pupil learning ability and knowledge accessibility. TAs have two main roles: supporting children’s learning, and supporting the main class teacher.

Working closely with class teachers, you will be helping children to expand their knowledge and play a positive role in school life. You will utilise your knowledge, creativity and listening and communication skills to help children understand the information presented. You will be able to provide varying levels of individual attention, reassurance and support with learning tasks as appropriate to children’s individual needs.

As a TA, every day is different and you will enjoy variety and a challenge. As a TA, you will be:

• Setting up equipment and helping to prepare the classroom for lessons, tidying up afterwards and helping with displays.

• Providing support to children who need additional help with their work.

• Helping pupils develop independent learning skills, manage their own learning and prioritise their time.

• Providing one-to-one and small group support to children who need it.

• Listening to children read.

• Helping the teacher with their marking and record-keeping.

• Looking after children’s pastoral needs, including dealing with playground accidents and caring for children who are upset.

• Helping with school trips, events and outings.

You will need to have relevant experience and/or qualifications in working with primary-aged children as you will be working under the supervision of the class teacher and/or SENDCo to support whole class learning, small targeted groups and/or individuals.

You will:

- Have NVQ/VRQ Level 3 Teaching Assistant Qualification

- have some knowledge of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and Additional Learning needs (ALN)

- have a good level of understanding of the emotional needs of children with autism, ADHD and attachment issue.

This post will also cover lunchtime duty.
